GIRLS LOVE BEYONCE

Drake made the statement that “Girls Love Beyonce” in his latest track. I’m not denying that—even I, hater of all things pop and Top 40, would fall at her feet and bet to kiss her ring in person.

I love Beyonce because she represents something that a lot of women want: the chameleon-like talent for being any kind of woman, any time she wants. She can be sexy or avant garde, feminine or an androgynous cyborg. She can be fashion-forward and ride the razor’s edge of every breaking trend and abandon it moments before she could be called gauche. As a style icon, she represents both familiar, feminine silhouettes but looks just as great in a very straight-lined, structured ensemble. She can borrow any look, no matter how “signature,” and reimagine it in that Beyonce way that makes her worthy of the title Queen B.

Also, as a person, she seems warm and welcoming: the picture-perfect Texas hostess. And unlike Britney Spears, who has had the life wrung out of her eyes by the business, Beyonce seems to be hungry for her own success made on her own terms. She has a sense self-possession that, personally speaking, I think should be more front-and-center in the music industry.

She’s like Queen B, The Good Diva. And anyway, “Diva” is a female version of a hust’lah….
